Summary of Minutes of Previous General Assembly

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • We have new people at Occupy Carbondale. Having new people is awesome!
  • Someone volunteered to run a D&D roleplaying game for those interested.
  • Anyone with tarps & ropes is encouraged to bring them tomorrow (Tuesday).
  • Adam Turl has started a library for Occupy Carbondale. This library is currently in the food tent.
  • No one has proposed an official policy along these lines, but it’s generally considered a bad idea to respond to hecklers, especially with heckling, and especially at night.
  • An officer of the SIUC Campus Police came by the occupation site to examine it and ask a few questions about our purpose for gathering and our sanitation procedures. Members of our police liaison committee spoke with her and gave their contact information to her. She was friendly and professional in her interactions with our people.
  • Jason Shoot brought soup for us to enjoy after tonight’s General Assembly.
  • Kyle Cheesewright [and crew?] picked up some donated pizza for us to enjoy after tonight’s General Assembly.
  • A police officer driving by offered a friendly wave.
  • Some of the food scavenged last night is still available in the food tent.

PROPOSALS

PROPOSAL: The primary purpose of tomorrow’s march is to invite people to participate in the ongoing discussion at Occupy Carbondale, including but not limited to our General Assembly.

  • RESPONSE: Consensus

PROPOSAL: Get people to wake up early in the morning to greet newcomers.

  • Further Discussion: The proposer clarified that he was suggesting we seek volunteers, not that we wake up the whole site in the early morning. Since it doesn’t require action by the group as a whole, a proposal is not necessary.
  • RESPONSE: Withdrawn

PROPOSAL: The route for our march tomorrow (October 17) will be as follows: start at the Bucky Dome, then march to the Morris Library plaza, then to Lawson Hall, then to the Student Center, then to Anthony Hall, then to Brush Towers, then back to the Bucky Dome.

  • RESPONSE: Consensus

PROPOSAL: Create a local “We Are The 99%” display including stories of local people to be displayed at one or more locations on campus and in the Carbondale community.

  • Further Discussion: There was widespread support for this project, but since it will be acted on by volunteers on the Outreach Committee, there is no need for a formal proposal.
  • RESPONSE: Withdrawn

PROPOSAL: Adjourn

  • RESPONSE: Consensus
